When Armenian Americans go the polls this November, they will have a clear choice. On the one hand, they will have President Bush, who has walked away from his commitments to the Armenian community. On the other, they will have Senator Kerry, a leading advocate of Armenian issues who has proven himself time and again as a friend of the Armenian community. I say to you today, make the right choice and urge others to do the same. Most of you are aware of the fact that President Bush began his Administration by retreating from his campaign pledge to properly recognize the Armenian Genocide, a promise he had made on the campaign trail back in February of 2000. Starting with his first April 24th statement, the President has ignored bi-partisan outcry, instead resorting to the use of evasive and euphemistic terminology to avoid calling the Armenian Genocide by its proper name - a clear instance of genocide. When we talk about Senator Kerry, we are not talking about a candidate, like Governor Bush, who is simply making a campaign promise. We are, rather, looking at a serious legislator with a strong track record in support of the recognition of the Armenian Genocide and on so many issues of concern to Armenian Americans. Time after time, year after year, Senator Kerry has acted out his convictions, and stood with his Armenian American friends as, they have fought for official U.S. recognition of the Genocide, strengthened U.S.-Armenia ties, support for the Republic of Armenia, and a fair and durable peace in Nagorno Karabagh. In November, let us stand behind Sen. Kerry and send him to the White House!!! I can't stress to you enough the importance of participation, and your presence here today, sends a very clear message that Armenian Americans are engaged, they are concerned, and their vote does count! Once again, I commend you on your activism and political involvement, and urge each and every single one of you to leave here today, ready and energized to mobilize those in your communities to take action and vote. |
Peter Balakian's Statement I believe this is the most important election since 1861. Never has there been more on the line than there is now. The Bush administration has created serious problems for America at home and in the international arena. The war in Iraq has made the Middle East less safe and has made America less safe. The Bush administration has left middle class and working class people behind while favoring the rich and corporate elite. The Bush administration has a deplorable record on environmental policies. The current administration has turned its back on Armenia because of its pro-Turkish and Caspian oil orientation. Bush failed to keep his promises about Armenian Genocide recognition. John Kerry is a talented and trained legislator and has a more deep and thorough understanding of the complex problems the United States faces both at home and abroad. He is focused on employment, health care, social security, and will work to make America a place where more social equality can be realized. He has a broader vision of the global arena and will enable the US to reclaim its lost respect around the world. I believe he understands some essential realities of Armenian history and will not betray Armenia as this present administration has. If there was ever a time to work hard on behalf of a presidential candidate it is now. John Kerry needs your energy and effort for the next two months. Please dig in and make a difference. >return to top |
Manoog Kaprelian's Statement Michael Manoog Kaprielian is a third generation Armenian-American from Providence, Rhode Island. Like John Kerry, he served in the Brown Water Navy in Vietnam in 1970-71 and his boat is distinguished with two Presidential Unit Citations. Among Vietnam Veterans, Manoog was a founding member of the congressionally chartered Vietnam Veterans of America in Rhode Island and served as state president. He was the closet to unseat incumbent national president in Kansas City at the 1997 national convention. I so wish I could be with you all today. My heart is broken because I miss you and my country needs our help. WE are simply bringing out the best in each other. All of us in America must do the same in shaping a younger soul. In this post "9-11" era, it has become very clear that we of Armenian heritage have a special gift for our America. By loving and celebrating each other we are better prepared to adapt, understand, and share our empathy with those who are from beyond our borders. Armenian - Americans, it is us that now need not change but now must change America for the challenges we all face. Have a wonderful time at today's Fest and let us all take your energy and the truth back to our communities and to those most contested states through family and friends so that we may all collectively again bring peace and honor to America. You are all in my thoughts and prayers as is our nation. And my love for you and our nation will continue to be told to strangers. Arto ROCKS!!!
